Acupuncture is a system of healing which has been practiced in China since pre-history. During the New Stone Age 10,000 to 4,00 years ago) stones were refined into fine needles and served as instruments of healing. Acupuncture was certainly around at the time of the Yellow Emperor, over 4600 years ago.
Accupuncture involves the insertion of fine stainless steel needles at specific points in the TCM channels or meridians along the body. The specific points are called acupuncture points, or accupoints.
By Stimulating the acupoints through needling, the flow of qi and blood can be regulated and diseases are thus treated.
Acupoints reside along more than a dozen of major meridians: twelve pairs of major meridians are systematically distributed over both sides of the body; two extra major meridians lie along the midlines of the abdomen and back.
More than 600 acupoints have been identified, each one having its own therapeutic action. 300 are in more common use.
Acupuncture is used for the treatment of an extremely wide range of health conditions including lower back pain, headaches and migraine, chronic pain, including neck and back pain, joint pain, dential pain, post operatice pain, post operative mausea and vomiting, allergies, including hay fever and eczema, fatigue, depression and anxiety, digestive disorders including irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), infertility, menstrual disorders, insomnia and psychological problems.
